FYI: Rivian is introducing Apple Music, Google Cast, Audible, and more to its Connect+ subscription, accessible via an over-the-air update for $14.99 per month.
Rivian Bolsters In-Car Entertainment with New Connect+ Subscription
Rivian is making significant strides in enhancing its vehicle’s infotainment system by launching a new subscription service called Connect+. Priced at $14.99 per month, Connect+ will bring a host of popular streaming apps and connectivity features to Rivian’s R1 vehicles. This software update will be rolled out over-the-air, ensuring seamless integration for both first and second-generation R1 models.
Breaking Away from the Pack
While Rivian has faced criticism alongside Tesla and GM for not adopting Apple CarPlay, the new Connect+ service appears to be a remedy for many CarPlay enthusiasts. Lucid has started incorporating CarPlay in 2023, but Rivian remains steadfast in developing its own in-house solutions. By adding key features that users expect from CarPlay into its infotainment system, Rivian seems to be taking a balanced approach towards user satisfaction.
What Connect+ Offers
With Connect+, Rivian is not merely catching up but setting a new standard by introducing several high-demand features:
-
Apple Music Integration: Users will have access to over 100 million songs, Apple Music Radio, and support for Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio. The design interface closely mimics Apple’s aesthetic, offering a familiar experience for existing Apple Music users.
-
Google Cast: This feature allows users to cast apps and videos to the vehicle’s screen when stationary, elevating the in-car entertainment experience.
-
Audible and Other Apps: Connect+ also includes access to Audible for audiobook enthusiasts.
- Enhanced Connectivity: Up to eight devices can now connect using the car’s LTE hotspot, facilitating better internet access on the go.
The Costs Involved
Despite its rich feature set, Connect+ is not free. Rivian is offering a two-month free trial after which the service will cost $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year. Additionally, Apple is extending a 90-day free trial for Apple Music, but subsequent usage will require a paid subscription.
Comparing to Competitors
Rivian is not the first to natively integrate Apple Music into its vehicle systems; brands like Porsche and Mercedes-Benz have already done so. However, Rivian’s collaboration with Apple brings a more integrated experience that parallels the look and functionality of Apple’s ecosystem. This should particularly appeal to audiophiles due to the superior audio processing directly from the vehicle’s onboard computer, compared to Bluetooth streaming.
The Double Edge of Subscription Models
While the extensive features of Connect+ provide substantial value, they come with a caveat. Rivian is transitioning previously free features, such as Spotify and Tidal, behind the Connect+ paywall. This move may require users to essentially double-pay for services they already subscribe to, which could be a sticking point for some customers.
A Look Ahead
Rivian plans to deploy these updates in batches, and owners will be notified when their vehicles are ready for the upgrade. This model of software-driven enhancements exemplifies the increasing trend of vehicle feature ecosystems evolving post-purchase, potentially setting a new standard in the automotive industry.
