FYI: Rivian introduces a Large+ battery option, offering more capacity with a software lock for 2025 R1T and R1S models.
—
Some buyers of the upcoming 2025 Rivian R1T and R1S models, who originally opted for a Large battery, are being offered an intriguing alternative: a Max battery that’s software-locked to function as a Large battery. This unique approach aims to streamline production and meet high demand more efficiently.
### Rivian’s Innovative Offer
The offer of a software-limited Max battery, being dubbed the Large+ battery, was first brought to light on August 2 by RivianTrackr and has since been confirmed by the company through a spokesperson to Motor Authority.
### The Need for Speed
Due to overwhelming demand for the Dual-Motor powertrain equipped with the 109.4-kWh Large battery, Rivian has decided to supply some orders with a 141.5-kWh Max battery, temporarily restricted via software to match the specs of the Large battery.
This strategy is reminiscent of similar tactics employed by Tesla in the past, aimed at expediting vehicle delivery times.
### Performance Metrics
According to Rivian, the performance of vehicles equipped with the Large and Large+ batteries remains identical. The 2025 Rivian R1T with a Dual-Motor setup boasts an estimated range of 330 miles for both the Large and Large+ batteries, while the Max battery pushes this range to 420 miles. Similarly, the 2025 R1S offers 330 miles of range with either the Large or Large+ battery, compared to 410 miles with the Max battery.
### Future Unlock Potential
There is no current option for customers to specifically order a Large+ battery. Instead, Rivian is making this offer selectively, based on existing orders and production schedules. When asked about the possibility of unlocking the additional battery capacity in the future for a fee, Rivian’s spokesperson mentioned that the company is exploring such options but has nothing definitive to announce at this time.
### Charging Guidelines
Owners may find a hidden perk with the Large+ battery: According to RivianTrackr sources, due to the software lock, it can be charged to 100% on a daily basis without the same wear concerns, as this would represent about 75-80% of its true capacity. However, Rivian officially advises the same charging practices for both battery versions: 70% for daily use, 85% for occasional extended drives, and 100% for road trips.
### Extensive Overhaul
The 2025 R1T and R1S updates go beyond a standard mid-cycle refresh. Though their exterior and interior designs remain unchanged, Rivian has overhauled their electronic and software systems. This upgrade has led to the elimination of 1.6 miles of wiring and a reduction in the number of individual ECUs from 17 to just seven. Additionally, Rivian has integrated its proprietary electronic driver-assist suite, the Rivian Autonomy Platform, and introduced a powerful new Quad-Motor powertrain delivering up to 1,025 horsepower.
In summary, Rivian’s innovative Large+ battery option reflects a strategic effort to balance high demand and production efficiency while offering potential future flexibility for range enhancements. This approach, combined with substantial system upgrades, reinforces the automaker’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction.
