FYI: Volkswagen’s new EV brand, Scout Motors, introduces its Terra pickup and Traveler SUV with a tease of a possible third vehicle, reflecting off-road capabilities inspired by the 1970s International Harvester Scout.
Volkswagen’s Advent of Scout EVs
Volkswagen Group has unveiled an intriguing addition to the electric vehicle landscape through its new U.S.-based rugged EV subsidiary, Scout Motors. In a move reminiscent of the 1970s classics, the company launched its Terra pickup and Traveler SUV, inviting adventurers to explore these modern takes on vintage icons.
A Glimpse of What’s to Come: A Third Model
During a recent presentation in Nashville, Volkswagen tantalized attendees with a shadowy silhouette of what could be the third addition to Scout’s lineup. The partially visible vehicle hints at an ultra-rugged SUV, suggesting a robust build emphasized by pronounced fender flares and rugged wheel designs.
Potential for More: The Removable Roof Conundrum
Though details surrounding the mysterious third model remain scarce, Scout’s head of product marketing, Shaheen Karimian, hinted to The Autopian that a two-door SUV featuring a removable roof might not be off the table. While the Traveler boasts a fixed top with available panoramic options, there is interest in meeting customer desires akin to those of Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco enthusiasts, both known for their open-air experiences.
Karimian acknowledged the design challenges posed by the current Traveler’s dimensions but expressed a potential future solution involving a vehicle of a more compact size and reduced door count. Further discussions revealed this concept is still conceptual, especially given the market’s low preference for two-door configurations.
Optimistic Future for Scout’s Electric Ventures
Reservations are already open for these electrifying Scouts, with starting prices set below $60,000 for each model. Prospective buyers can expect the electric-only range to exceed 350 miles, with an optional gas-powered range extender that propels the total distance beyond 500 miles. To bring these dreams to reality, production is slated to commence in 2027 at a state-of-the-art facility in South Carolina.
Conclusion: The Road Ahead
Scout Motors is off to a bold start by reviving classic designs with modern electric innovation. The introduction of Terra and Traveler sets the stage for an exciting future, as enthusiasts eagerly await further developments, including the enigmatic third model. For those keen on reliving the spirit of adventure in a more sustainable way, the wait until 2027 promises to be worthwhile.
