FYI: The new Smart #5 is set to challenge the Tesla Model Y in the electric compact crossover market with its anticipated launch in early 2025.
Smart’s Bold Expansion with the #5
The Smart lineup is about to grow, with the addition of the new Smart #5 electric compact crossover. Expected to hit the market in early 2025, this new model positions itself as a formidable competitor to the popular Tesla Model Y. The introduction of the #5 will expand Smart’s offerings to three distinct vehicles.
Smart’s Electrifying Comeback
Although Smart exited the U.S. market in 2019, the brand has continued to flourish globally. Now exclusively an electric vehicle manufacturer, Smart recently revealed its most ambitious model yet: the Smart #5. This marks a significant milestone for a brand traditionally known for its tiny ForTwo model.
Design and Dimensions
The Smart #5, a production realization of the concept shown in April, measures an impressive 185 inches in length—just two inches shy of the Tesla Model Y. Interestingly, its 114-inch wheelbase actually surpasses that of the Tesla, suggesting a spacious interior. Its flat roof design further enhances its roomy appeal.
Innovative Platform and Rapid Charging
Details about the vehicle’s features remain sparse until closer to its market debut. However, Smart has disclosed the use of a dedicated EV platform boasting 800-volt technology and a 100kWh battery. This advanced system promises rapid charging capabilities, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in a mere 15 minutes.
Performance and Drive Modes
While the full specifications of the powertrain are yet to be revealed, speculations indicate that one version of the Smart #5 could deliver up to 640 horsepower. Confirmations from Smart suggest that multiple drive modes will be available, including specialized settings for off-road conditions like sand, snow, mud, and rocks.
Rugged and Versatile Exterior
The Smart #5 showcases a robust, boxy exterior that emphasizes a muscular design. Buyers can further customize this rugged look with a range of accessories. The Summit Edition, a special launch variant, previews some of these additions, such as a roof light bar, roof carriers, side ladders, side steps, an electric trailer hitch, and underbody protection.
Luxurious and Tech-Savvy Interior
Inside, the Smart #5 impresses with an array of advanced features. The dashboard boasts a series of screens, including an entertainment system equipped with a built-in projector and a high-end Sennheiser audio system featuring 21 speakers, one of which is portable. Additional highlights include a head-up display with augmented reality capabilities and substantial storage space—54 cubic feet in the rear and 2.5 cubic feet in the front trunk. Details about the standard features are yet to be revealed.
Development and Production
The Smart #5 is the result of a strategic partnership forged in 2019 between Mercedes-Benz, Smart’s parent company, and Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely. While Mercedes-Benz leads the design efforts, the engineering and production responsibilities lie with Geely.
Conclusion
The Smart #5 represents a bold new direction for the brand, merging innovative design, powerful performance, and advanced technology. As it prepares to go head-to-head with the Tesla Model Y, the Smart #5 is poised to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle market.
