From Console Dreams to Reality: Shane van der Merwe’s Ultimate Nissan S14 Build
Like many car enthusiasts, Shane van der Merwe’s passion for cars began in the virtual world of console racing games. He always dreamed of owning a Japanese performance car that matched the exhilarating experience of his digital racing exploits. Years later, Shane’s dream manifested into an impressive reality, showcasing how dedication and a passion for cars can lead to extraordinary results.
The Quest for a Rarity
In South Africa, iconic Japanese cars like the Toyota Supra, Nissan Skyline, and Mazda RX-7 are a rare sight. However, Shane managed to locate a genuine Nissan S14 200SX, imported in limited numbers by Nissan South Africa. Acquiring this gem in 2017 marked the beginning of Shane’s journey to build his dream car.
A Transformation Begins
Just three weeks after purchasing the S14, Shane embarked on an extensive transformation. He replaced the car’s standard SR20DET engine with a low-mileage RB25DET NEO engine, chosen for its robust internals and top-feed injectors. The initial fanfare was modest as he drove with the stock engine, preparing for more significant modifications ahead.
Power and Performance Upgrades
Shane meticulously upgraded the new engine, equipping it with machined heads, CP forged pistons, Eagle forged rods, and various other performance parts. This included the high-performance Precision Turbo 62/62 turbocharger and a comprehensive fuel delivery system featuring Precision 1,000cc injectors and an AEM fuel pressure regulator. The power upgrades culminate in an impressive 419kW (561hp) at 0.8bar (11.7psi) of boost, managed by a MaxxECU engine system.
Paint and Body Revisions
With performance in check, the car awaited its aesthetic transformation. Initially stuck in primer due to budget constraints, the S14’s bodywork was finally painted a pristine gloss white by the end of 2021. This marked a key milestone in Shane’s project.
Suspension and Wheels
To enhance handling, Shane installed Tein adjustable coilovers, a Tein strut brace, and a Sikky stabilizer bar. The braking system features Brembo calipers and EBC discs paired with Yellowstuff pads. The car stands out with 18" Enkei RPF1 wheels, embodying the perfect blend of style and performance.
Interior Upgrades
Inside, Shane retained the classic ’90s Japanese aesthetic while incorporating essential upgrades like a Sparco competition suede steering wheel, Cobra Monaco Pro seats with TAKATA Racing harnesses, and a MaxxECU 7-inch display. These additions ensure that the car not only performs exceptionally but also delivers a cockpit experience matching its exterior prowess.
Conclusion
Shane van der Merwe’s journey from console gaming to creating a real-life performance masterpiece is a testament to his dedication and passion. This meticulously built Nissan S14 isn’t just a car; it’s a living testament to the dreams of a car enthusiast.
