FYI: Tesla addresses bonnet issue in China with Over-the-Air update for 1.68 million vehicles
In an innovative move, Tesla has announced a "recall" of 1.68 million vehicles in China, but without the need for physical servicing. Instead, the affected Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles, built from October 2020 to July 2024, will be fixed via an Over-the-Air (OTA) Software Update.
The Issue: Hood Latch
According to the State Administration for Market Regulation, the issue pertains to the bonnet or hood of the vehicles. An unlatched bonnet could potentially obstruct the driver’s view by opening and covering the windshield, thereby creating a significant safety hazard.
Affected Models and Production Period
The cars in question, covering the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, were produced between October 17, 2020, and July 17, 2024. The Model 3 and Model Y vehicles involved were built in Tesla’s China Gigafactory, while the Model S and Model X cars were manufactured in the United States and then shipped to China.
OTA Update to the Rescue
Tesla will deliver the necessary fixes through an OTA Software Update, which means the cars will not need to be physically taken to a service center. This technological solution requires owners to have an internet connection to download and install the update.
Previous Fixes in the United States
Just last week, Tesla remedied the same issue with over 1.8 million vehicles in the United States using the same OTA method. Notably, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had indicated that only 1 percent of these vehicles were likely to be affected by the defect.
Competitive Market and Government Relations
China remains a crucial market for Tesla’s electric vehicles (EVs), which are highly sought after in the sector. The competitive landscape for EVs in China is significantly more intense than in the United States, making Tesla’s relationship with the Chinese government all the more vital. Recently, Tesla struck a significant deal to introduce their Full Self-Driving technology in China, following Elon Musk’s meeting with Chinese officials earlier this year.
Conclusion
Tesla’s innovative use of OTA updates to address the hood latch issue in China showcases the company’s commitment to leveraging technology for rapid problem-solving. This approach not only minimizes inconvenience for vehicle owners but also underscores Tesla’s proactive stance in maintaining safety standards.
