Tesla China has unveiled an enticing upgrade for Model Y owners, allowing them to enhance their vehicles with a multicolored ambient lighting system. Priced at an affordable RMB1,299 (approximately $180), this retrofit promises to elevate the in-car experience through both hardware and software enhancements.

This latest offering from Tesla China, spotted by electric vehicle enthusiasts on social media, features a comprehensive ambient lighting system retrofit. The upgrade incorporates hardware changes along with software updates, providing a broad spectrum of up to 256 colors for the car’s interior lights, all controllable via the Model Y’s infotainment system.
Immersive In-Car Experience
In the official description, Tesla China emphasizes the aesthetic and experiential value of the upgrade: “The ambient lighting line is even and soft, creating an immersive in-car experience and adding unique charm. The ambient light supports touch screen control, provides up to 256 color options, and the color of the ambient light can be adjusted according to the mood or scene.”
Dashboard Replacement
It’s important to note that the retrofit requires replacing the vehicle’s classic wooden dashboard with a new dash panel made of textile materials. This material is the same as the one introduced last year in the Giga Shanghai-made Model Y update, which featured the textile dashboard, a dedicated LED light strip for ambient lighting, and a new set of wheels.
Compatibility and Scheduling
While the upgrade is attractively priced, it is only applicable to specific Model Y units manufactured between January 24, 2022, and October 1, 2023. Tesla China advises Model Y owners to confirm their vehicles’ compatibility by contacting their service centers. Additionally, it’s recommended to schedule the retrofit appointment at least five days in advance, as the installation must be performed at an authorized service center.
