FYI: Frito-Lay Expands its Tesla Semi Fleet with New Chargers in Bakersfield
In a significant move towards sustainable logistics, Frito-Lay is expanding its infrastructure for Tesla Semi trucks by adding an additional array of chargers at its Bakersfield, California factory. These all-electric Class 8 trucks have been part of Frito-Lay’s fleet for a couple of years, underscoring the company’s commitment to reduce its carbon footprint with Tesla’s cutting-edge transport solutions.
New Charging Installations in Bakersfield
To support the growing number of Tesla Semis making local deliveries in Southern California, Frito-Lay has filed permits to install an 8-stall charger array at its Bakersfield site—positioned advantageously about three hours south of its existing setup in Modesto. This strategic expansion will facilitate increased operations in the region, ensuring efficient energy replenishment for their electric fleet.
Interestingly, Tesla has updated its terminology, referring to these new installations as "Semi Chargers" instead of the traditional “Megachargers.” Although a subtle shift, it hints at Tesla’s evolving branding strategy.
Frito-Lay’s Environmental Commitment
Frito-Lay’s proactive measures highlight its leadership in embracing sustainable transport solutions. In 2022, it had already begun integrating charging infrastructure to facilitate the deployment of Tesla Semi trucks for efficient deliveries in the western United States. The company remains at the forefront of transitioning logistics to greener technologies.
Frito-Lay isn’t alone in pioneering the use of the Tesla Semi. PepsiCo also has a history of utilizing these zero-emission trucks, reflecting a broader industry movement towards sustainable practices.
Tesla Semi’s Impressive Long-Distance Performance
Apart from their extensive use by these corporations, Tesla Semi trucks have also demonstrated exceptional performance capabilities. Notably, during the Run on Less EV trucking study in 2023, a Tesla Semi achieved a remarkable 1,000-mile journey within a day, underscoring its operational capabilities for long-haul routes.
Tesla’s Production Expansion Plans
Looking forward, Tesla is set to ramp up production of the Semi. At the Q4 2024 earnings call, Tesla’s VP of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, outlined plans for the first assemblies of the high-volume Semi design set for late 2025, with a scaled production targeted for early 2026. This will take place at a new facility near Tesla’s Gigafactory in Reno, which is currently nearing completion as observed from a recent drone video.
As Tesla continues to innovate, these advancements promise to further drive the adoption of electric vehicles in commercial fleets, contributing positively to environmental sustainability. Frito-Lay’s collaboration with Tesla and their latest infrastructure developments in Bakersfield exemplify a defining step towards a future dominated by clean energy transport solutions.
