FYI: Electric vehicles (EVs) have officially overtaken petrol cars on Norwegian roads, marking a significant milestone in the push for sustainable transportation.
Tesla Leads as EVs Dominate Norwegian Roads
Electric vehicles now dominate the streets of Norway, with Tesla at the forefront of this significant shift. According to the latest statistics from Norway’s Road Traffic Information Council (OFV), EVs have surpassed petrol cars in total numbers. Out of Norway’s 2.8 million registered passenger cars, 754,303 are electric, while 753,905 are petrol-fueled.
Øyvind Solberg Thorsen, Director of OFV, commented on this substantial achievement: “This is historic. A milestone few saw coming ten years ago. The electrification of the passenger car fleet is keeping a high pace, and Norway is making rapid strides toward becoming the first country in the world with a passenger car population dominated by electric cars.”
Tesla’s Dominance in Sales
Tesla has emerged as the leader in vehicle sales, overtaking traditional car manufacturer Toyota by a substantial margin. Data from OFV reveals that Tesla sold 2,485 units in August alone, totaling 13,440 vehicles sold this year in Norway. In comparison, Toyota sold 805 units in August and a total of 9,761 cars so far this year.
Shift in Registration Trends
A local Norwegian newspaper reports that EVs are now the predominant choice in new passenger car registrations. This trend is not only due to high sales but also because Norwegian drivers have started deregistering many of their older petrol and diesel cars post-summer.
Decline in Diesel Vehicles
In addition to the decline in petrol vehicles, the number of diesel passenger cars has also seen a reduction, dipping below one million this month. Thorsen remarked, “The speed at which we are seeing the replacement of the passenger car fleet now may indicate that in 2026 we will also have more electric cars than diesel cars.”
The Future of EVs in Norway
As Norway continues to embrace electric vehicles, the country is poised to strengthen its position as a global leader in sustainable transportation. With Tesla leading the charge, the future looks promising for the further electrification of Norway’s passenger car fleet.
