FYI: Tesla has expanded the use of its speed profiles in its Full Self-Driving software, now available on more roads.
Tesla Enhances FSD Capabilities with Expanded Speed Profiles
Tesla has introduced significant enhancements to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised feature, extending the versatility of speed profiles to a wider range of road types. This advancement comes with the release of FSD version 12.5.6.2, altering its previous limitations.
Expanded Access to Speed Profiles
The latest FSD update marks a shift from prior restrictions that confined the use of speed profiles to highway scenarios. Now, these profiles can be engaged on any road boasting a speed limit of 50 mph or more. This development was confirmed this week by Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Vice President of AI Software, enhancing the flexibility and functionality of Tesla’s autonomous technology.
Originally, speed profiles within the FSD Supervised version were applied exclusively to highways. However, following the software update 2024.33.30, users have observed availability on city streets, offering a broader spectrum for FSD engagement.
Understanding Tesla’s Speed Modes
Tesla’s FSD software provides three distinct speed profiles: Chill, Standard, and Hurry. These were previously identified as Average and Assertive modes. Chill mode is designed for a relaxed drive, maintaining positioning in slower lanes and avoiding frequent lane changes. On the other end, Hurry mode is tailored for those seeking a more dynamic drive, favoring faster speeds and more agile lane maneuvering. Standard mode strikes a balance, integrating elements of both faster lane changes and a mild driving pace.
This update is initially set for deployment in vehicles equipped with Tesla’s AI4 computer systems. However, the adaptation is expected to trickle down to vehicles with older HW3 hardware soon. Although speed profiles currently operate exclusively on roads with speed limits above 50 mph, future updates could extend this functionality to roads with lower speed thresholds.
What Lies Ahead
Tesla’s commitment to refining the driving experience through technological advancements continues to set the pace within the automotive sector. Future iterations of the Full Self-Driving software, including the anticipated FSD V13, aim to incorporate features essential for unsupervised driving. This effort underscores Tesla’s ongoing innovation and adaptation to new automotive technologies.
