Tesla Shifts Focus in Thailand, Halts Factory Plans: Report
By William Kouch, Editor of Automotive.fyi
Tesla has put its plans to build a manufacturing facility in Thailand on hold, indicating a shift in strategy within the region. Instead of pursuing factory development, Tesla will focus on expanding its charging infrastructure and promoting its electric vehicles in the country.
Background on Tesla’s Initial Plans
In late 2022, rumors began to circulate that Tesla was eyeing Thailand as a potential location for its next factory. This speculation gained traction when Thailand’s Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, paid a visit to Tesla’s Fremont Factory in November and had discussions with top executives, including Lars Moravy, Tesla’s VP of Vehicle Engineering.
Following the visit, Prime Minister Thavisin hinted that the electric vehicle giant was considering a significant investment in Thailand. He suggested Tesla was evaluating three specific sites for a possible factory, with a proposed investment of around $5 billion.
Recent Developments and New Focus
However, according to sources cited by Thai publication The Economic Base, Tesla has decided to suspend its factory plans in Thailand and other parts of Asia. This strategic shift will see the company concentrating on bolstering its Supercharger Network across Thailand, providing better support for its local customer base.
The Economic Base reported: “Tesla is only talking about charging stations at the moment. The matter of setting up factories is closed, and it’s not just in Thailand – it’s closed all over the world. Plans in Malaysia, Indonesia, and other regions have all been withdrawn, leaving focus only on China, America, and Germany.”
Expanding the Charging Network
Tesla’s new strategy involves growing its network of charging stations, which is crucial for enhancing the usability and convenience of Tesla vehicles for Thai consumers. A robust charging network is vital for encouraging more drivers to switch to electric vehicles, helping Tesla gain a stronger foothold in this emerging market.
Promoting Tesla Vehicles
Besides expanding the Supercharger Network, Tesla has been actively promoting its vehicle lineup in Thailand. Earlier this year, the company announced a tour for its much-anticipated Cybertruck, which will run until September 2024. This initiative aims to generate excitement and interest among consumers, potentially driving up future sales.
