Enhancements for Optimal Visibility and Operation
As unveiled in a recent episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, described the new design element aimed at boosting both the visibility and functionality of Tesla’s advanced driving systems. The upgraded design introduces a small lip around the side repeater camera. This strategic addition is more than mere aesthetics—it serves a crucial function by generating an air current that naturally clears water and dirt away from the camera lens.
Moravy detailed, "The lip on the edge of the side repeater is engineered for a self-cleaning effect. This creates an eddy current, allowing airflow to naturally sweep away any obstructive elements like water, ensuring the camera remains clean and operational."
Implications for Improved Driving Technology
This design evolution is poised to deliver superior camera clarity compared to its predecessor, enhancing safety and efficiency in both supervised and future unsupervised FSD operations. This move comes as Tesla gears up to introduce autonomous ride-hailing services anticipated later this year.
Aerodynamic Advances in the New Model Y
Beyond the camera enhancement, the conversation in the Jay Leno’s Garage episode, featuring Tesla’s Head Designer Franz von Holzhausen, highlights several aerodynamic upgrades on the revamped Model Y. These include enhancements to the bumper, tires, and overall vehicle shape that collectively form an air curtain, contributing to a reduced drag coefficient, maximizing efficiency.
Additionally, the new Model Y sports the lowest assimilation of rolling resistance and aerodynamics achieved on a Tesla SUV, courtesy of its specialized wheel and tire setup.
