Tesla China Recalls 870 Imported Model X Vehicles Due to Roof Trim Issues
By William Kouch, Editor of Automotive.fyi
In a recent development, Tesla China has announced a recall of 870 imported Model X vehicles to address problems with the roof trim panels. This information comes directly from a posting on the website of China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).
Recall Details and Affected Units
The recall targets Tesla Model X units manufactured between March 16, 2016, and July 31, 2016. This issue mirrors the recall previously initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States, which affected 9,136 units of the 2016 Model X.
The Backstory
Earlier in November 2020, Tesla initiated a recall for the Model X because initial inspections revealed that some vehicles’ roof trim panels had inadequate primer. This deficiency led to weakened adhesion over time, increasing the risk of the panels detaching from the vehicle.
Follow-up Actions and Inspection
According to SAMR, it appears that even some of the vehicles covered in the November 2020 recall might still have roof trim panels with insufficient primer. As part of the newly announced recall, Tesla China will conduct a thorough reinspection. This will include a tension test on the roof panels to assess adhesion. If a vehicle fails the adhesion test, Tesla China will replace the roof panels free of charge.
Tesla’s Expansion in China
Tesla ventured into the Chinese market in April 2014 with the introduction of the Model S sedan, followed by the Model X in 2016. The success of these models in China encouraged Tesla to establish Giga Shanghai, which now produces the Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers. Giga Shanghai has grown to become Tesla’s largest factory by volume and the company’s primary export hub.
Conclusion
Tesla’s ongoing commitment to quality and safety is evident as they address these issues promptly, ensuring customer satisfaction and vehicle reliability. The reinspection and potential replacement of roof panels at no cost is a testament to Tesla’s dedication to maintaining its standards.
