FYI: Tesla and EVject resolve their dispute, paving the way for enhanced EV charging safety standards.
In a significant development, Tesla and aftermarket accessory manufacturer EVject have reached a mutual agreement regarding EVject’s product safety standards. According to an email from EVject shared with its customers, the company announced a recall of its V1.0 and V1.1 Escape Connectors. These will be replaced with the new V1.2 connectors, now equipped with built-in thermal protection.
The Lawsuit and Safety Concerns
Tesla initiated legal action against EVject, citing safety concerns over the company’s Escape Connectors. These connectors enable drivers to disconnect and depart from a Supercharger without stepping out of their vehicles. Tesla raised alarms over the lack of overtemperature protection in EVject’s earlier models, seeking to ban the importation of these connectors into the United States.
Community Reactions and Musk’s Intervention
The lawsuit sparked a widespread debate within the EV community. Many users expressed that the EVject product was essential for enhancing safety during Supercharging sessions. Tesla CEO Elon Musk acknowledged these concerns, tweeting his intention to investigate the matter.
Reaching Common Ground
Following Musk’s promise of an investigation, EVject communicated to its customers their intention to be “good partners with Tesla.” They confirmed a voluntary recall of their V1.0 and V1.1 models. The latest V1.2 Escape Connector will comply with Tesla’s stringent standards, featuring advanced thermal sensors to provide added protection. This updated version will begin shipping later this year.
EVject’s Commitment to Safety
“The EVject Escape Connector is evolving to meet the latest safety standards. Our upcoming version will feature advanced thermal sensors to enhance safety during charging. These improvements will help prevent potential hazards and ensure optimal charging performance. Upcoming version (v1.2) will include: (1) Advanced thermal sensors for enhanced safety; (2) Improved temperature monitoring; and (3) Compliance with the latest charging recommendations,” the company noted.
Complimentary Upgrades for Customers
Customers who have previously purchased EVject V1.0 and V1.1 Escape Connectors are eligible for a complimentary upgrade to the V1.2 version. EVject is asking customers to return their older models to receive credit, which can be used to acquire the new V1.2 connectors upon their availability.
Tesla’s Official Statement
Tesla Charging acknowledged EVject’s recall and update efforts via a post on its X account (formerly Twitter). “Tesla and OEMs will keep working with the industry to provide safe adapters and develop common sense regulatory standards,” stated Tesla Charging.
Conclusion
This collaboration between Tesla and EVject sets a valuable precedent for the EV industry, emphasizing the importance of safety and innovation. The introduction of the new V1.2 connectors aligns both companies towards a common goal of safer, more efficient EV charging experiences for consumers.
