FYI: Tesla plans to begin production of the highly anticipated next-gen Roadster in 2025, promising impressive performance enhancements.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed exciting updates about the next-generation Roadster during Tesla’s Q2 2024 earnings call. Musk stated that the engineering for the all-electric supercar is nearly complete, with a few additional enhancements in the pipeline. He emphasized that production is slated to commence next year, positioning the Roadster as a standout in the EV market.
### Upcoming Roadster Engineering Nears Completion
Responding to an investor question during the earnings call, Musk reassured stakeholders about the progress of the Roadster. “Most of the engineering is completed. We still have some upgrades we want to incorporate, but we expect to start production next year. It will be something truly special,” Musk affirmed.
### Initial Specs and Competition
Originally unveiled in conjunction with the Tesla Semi in late 2017, the next-gen Roadster was advertised with remarkable specs: a 0-60 mph time of just 1.99 seconds, a top speed exceeding 250 mph, and an impressive 620-mile range per charge utilizing a 200 kWh battery pack. Additionally, Musk has teased the idea of a “SpaceX Package,” hinting at enhanced performance capabilities through the incorporation of SpaceX technology.
### Evolution Since Announcement
Since the grand reveal over six years ago, the Roadster’s journey has been one of anticipation and gradual progress. The Tesla Semi began limited production in late 2022, while high-performance marvels like the Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire have pushed the boundaries of speed, achieving or surpassing the initially advertised 1.99-second 0-60 mph benchmark.
### Ensuring the Roadster’s Unique Edge
Given the advancements in EV performance, Tesla aims to ensure the next-gen Roadster stands out. Musk has promised that the Roadster will be a collaboration with SpaceX, aspiring to achieve a groundbreaking sub-1-second 0-60 mph time. “The Roadster must offer something extraordinary. It should not merely replicate the Model S’s performance metrics, but transcend them as a performance-oriented 2-door vehicle,” Musk remarked.
This ambition underscores Tesla’s intent to elevate the Roadster to a halo vehicle status, a symbol of cutting-edge innovation and performance excellence.
