FYI: Tesla has taken legal action against EVject, an aftermarket safety connector manufacturer, citing significant safety concerns regarding the product.
Tesla Sues EVject Over Safety Issues with Aftermarket Connector
Tesla has initiated a lawsuit against EVject, an aftermarket manufacturer known for its safety escape connectors, which have gained substantial approval from the electric vehicle community. According to Tesla’s complaint, the escape connectors are a serious safety hazard and have negatively impacted the company’s brand reputation.
The Case for EVject
Tesla’s extensive electric vehicle charging network spans North America. The wide coverage means that some Supercharger locations are in remote areas, which may be unsafe during nighttime. EVject’s connectors have been promoted as a solution to this problem, providing drivers an option to escape potentially dangerous situations without leaving their vehicle to disconnect the Supercharger plug manually.
EVject’s product has become especially popular among women and younger drivers, who have expressed that certain late-night Supercharging sessions made them feel vulnerable. The product’s breakaway feature is designed to allow the vehicle to drive away while minimizing damage to both the car’s charge port and the Supercharger plug.
Tesla’s Safety Concerns
Tesla’s lawsuit argues that EVject is misleading the public by marketing its product as safe. The crux of Tesla’s complaint is that EVject’s connectors lack overtemperature protection, creating substantial safety risks. Filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, Tesla’s legal document states:
"In the event of an over-temperature condition in the Connector, the lack of overtemperature protection poses a safety risk. Tests indicate that the surface temperature of the Connector can reach up to 100°C after 30 minutes of charging at 420 ADC. This scenario not only risks burns to users but also increases the chance of fire and ignition of other combustible materials in the charger cable, vehicle, and Supercharger infrastructure."
Community Reaction
The lawsuit has elicited polarizing reactions within the electric vehicle community. Supporters of Tesla’s legal action argue that EVject’s marketing instills unnecessary fear, uncertainty, and doubt. On the other hand, proponents of the aftermarket connector believe that Tesla should collaborate with EVject to improve the product’s safety standards rather than opting for litigation.
Tesla, known for prioritizing safety, yet lacking an official alternative in its shop, is seen by some as being uncharacteristically stern against an accessory that aims to enhance driver protection.
