Tesla Giga Shanghai Resumes Full Capacity Production: Report
Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai is back to full operational capacity, according to Chinese media sources that recently toured the site. The factory, responsible for producing the Model 3 and Model Y, is now buzzing with activity.
Earlier this year, reports suggested that Tesla was deliberately cutting down vehicle production at its Shanghai plant. Reuters had noted in late May that the electric vehicle giant was planning to reduce at least 20% of its production at the facility during the March-June 2024 period.
Tesla China remained relatively silent on these production cut rumors. Nonetheless, it was evident through declining vehicle registrations and exports that production levels had dipped compared to last year. But as Tesla moves into the third quarter, it appears committed to ramping up production and deliveries to hit its year-end targets.
Elon Musk has expressed confidence that Tesla’s vehicle sales this year could surpass last year’s numbers. Achieving this goal would require Giga Shanghai to operate at its peak capacity. Fortunately, this seems to be the case now. Reporters from Jiemian News, who visited the plant this month, confirmed that Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y production lines are running at full throttle.
In true Tesla fashion, the Shanghai Gigafactory is also leveraging high levels of automation. Reportedly, the general assembly line features stacked production zones and interconnected workshops, facilitating the smooth movement of finished parts. The automation rate of the facility stands at an impressive 95%, with the welding area being nearly 100% automated.
Additionally, Tesla VP Grace Tao provided updates on the upcoming Shanghai Megafactory during the media visit. According to Tao, the Megafactory is on track to be completed by 2025. This aligns with recent reports that the facility will focus on producing Tesla’s flagship energy product, the Megapack grid-scale battery.
