FYI: Thornley Kelham has unveiled its extraordinary Jaguar XK120 restomod, blending classic elegance with modern performance upgrades.
Thornley Kelham’s Stunning Jaguar XK120 Restomod
Thornley Kelham, renowned for meticulously restoring European classic cars, has accomplished a remarkable feat with its first Jaguar XK120 restomod, named the XK European. This project preserves the essence of the original while rejuvenating it with contemporary enhancements, seamlessly merging old-world charm with new-age performance.
A Nod to Classic Elegance with Modern Muscle
British restoration specialist Thornley Kelham has revealed an impressive restomod of the iconic Jaguar XK120. This project showcases the delicately balanced process of paying homage to the original design while integrating modern technological advancements. The company, which has also restored gems like the Porsche 356, Porsche 911, and Lancia Aurelia, now turns its expertise to the Jaguar XK120.
Crafted by Experts
In a demonstration of its dedication to quality and innovation, Thornley Kelham enlisted former McLaren designer Paul Howes to reimagine the XK120’s body. Utilizing lightweight alloys and incorporating dimensional adjustments, the restomod boasts a subtly wider and more muscular appearance, with a roofline lowered by approximately 2.5 inches. These tweaks enhance the vehicle’s visual appeal without straying too far from its classic roots.
Engine and Performance Upgrades
Under the hood, the original XK engine has been retained but significantly upgraded. The 3.8-liter inline six-cylinder engine now delivers between 300 to 340 horsepower, a substantial increase from the 160-220 horsepower offered in the original XK120 models. Enhancements such as new camshafts, rebored cylinders, and a direct fuel injection system contribute to this increased power.
Enhanced Chassis and Safety Features
Performance isn’t limited to raw power. The chassis has undergone significant modifications for superior handling and comfort. Features include:
- Suspension Upgrades: Double wishbones, Bilstein dampers, and Eibach springs for improved stability.
- Modern Wheels and Brakes: 16-inch wheels paired with contemporary disc brakes ensure safety and reliability.
- Enhanced Visibility: LED headlights have been installed for better nighttime driving.
Interior Elegance and Modern Conveniences
Inside, Thornley Kelham prioritizes both safety and luxury. A hidden roll cage is discreetly installed for added protection, while surfaces are adorned in Connolly leather, exuding classic elegance. Custom bucket seats are equipped with optional four-point harnesses. Modern amenities include air conditioning, power windows, power steering, a wireless phone charger, and a sophisticated infotainment system. While the gauges maintain their vintage look, their internals are completely modernized.
Exclusivity and Pricing
Thornley Kelham’s commitment to exclusivity is reflected in their production numbers; only 25 units of the XK European will be built. The base price starts at 550,000 GBP (approximately $725,000), excluding the donor car’s cost. This limited production ensures that each vehicle is not just a car but a collector’s item.
Summary
Thornley Kelham’s restomod of the Jaguar XK120, now known as the XK European, represents a harmonious blend of classic design and modern performance. With meticulous attention to detail, both in aesthetics and engineering, this vehicle revitalizes a timeless classic for the contemporary era. The limited production run of 25 units only adds to its allure, ensuring that each model remains an exclusive piece of automotive history.
