FYI: Gen Z’s Car Choices Reflect Their Concerns for Fuel Economy and Climate Change
There has been substantial debate about whether Gen Z is genuinely interested in cars. A recent survey by Insurify has shed some light on this topic, revealing that young people today do indeed have their preferred vehicles, similar to other generations. This survey ranked the top 10 car models by generation, emphasizing how younger demographics prioritize fuel efficiency, affordability, and ease of maneuverability. Consequently, small sedans are particularly favored among Gen Z.
Gen Z’s Top 10 Favorite Cars:
- Honda Civic
- Honda Accord
- Toyota Camry
- Nissan Altima
- Toyota Corolla
- Hyundai Elantra
- Hyundai Sonata
- Chevrolet Malibu
- Ford Fusion
- Nissan Sentra
The Honda Civic emerged as the most popular car among Gen Z. This aligns well with Insurify’s findings, which indicate that 85% of Americans between 18-29 believe climate change will impose a significant financial burden on their future, compared to only 61% of those over 65. This environmental consciousness is evident in the car choices of older generations; Gen X and Baby Boomers favor pickup trucks and SUVs, while Gen Z shows no such preference.
Top 10 Cars Driven by Millennials:
- Honda Accord
- Nissan Altima
- Toyota Camry
- Honda Civic
- Toyota Corolla
- Ford F-Series
- Chevrolet Malibu
- Hyundai Elantra
- Hyundai Sonata

Despite Baby Boomers’ preference for larger vehicles, foreign brands are universally cherished across all age groups. Specifically, Toyota ranks second among Baby Boomers, third among Gen X and Millennials, and fourth among Gen Z. Likewise, Honda, Hyundai, and Kia receive high ratings from all demographics. However, it’s noteworthy that Baby Boomers are the sole age group to rank Mercedes-Benz among their top vehicles, placing it at number 10. In contrast, Gen Z notably excludes Volkswagen from its preferences, ranking it 110th.
Insurify’s comprehensive analysis also looked at the relative popularity of specific car models across different age groups. For instance, the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is 298% more popular with Baby Boomers than the general populace, while the Hummer H2 is 94% more favored by Gen X. On the other hand, Millennials show a 71% higher preference for the Kia Carnival, and the Toyota GR 86 is 239% more popular among Gen Z.
Gen Z’s car choices reflect their conscious efforts to mitigate climate change impacts through fuel-efficient and affordable options. The generational comparison also highlights the shifting trends and varying priorities regarding automobile preferences. This information is instrumental in understanding market trends and the evolving demands in the automotive industry.
