FYI: The 2024 Porsche Panamera holds its own as a distinctive luxury sedan in Porsche’s lineup, blending traditional Porsche driving dynamics with a unique luxury experience.
The Distinctive 2024 Porsche Panamera
The 2024 Porsche Panamera distinguishes itself from the brand’s fleet of popular SUVs, agile sports cars, and the forward-looking Taycan sedan. Unlike its counterparts, the Panamera stands apart in terms of body style, dimensions, and on-road behavior, offering a stark contrast to the conventional luxury sedans like the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class.
A Different Kind of Luxury Sedan
Porsche’s unique approach to vehicle design has always been about standing out. The Panamera continues this tradition, making it an unconventional choice for a luxury sedan. This model not only looks like a Porsche but also drives like one, embodying the brand’s signature driving experience. However, a few deviations from Porsche’s high standards exist in this improved Panamera version.
Driving the Panamera 4
Testing the updated Panamera E-Hybrid in Germany was thrilling, but the highlight was driving the 2024 Porsche Panamera 4. This model is powered by a base 2.9-liter turbocharged V6 engine that churns out 348 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, paired with all-wheel drive. The base price starts at $108,550, but the test model’s price, after comprehensive configuration, reached $140,230.
Air Suspension Magic
The test vehicle was equipped with standard air suspension, proving to be a marvel. The air suspension offers a smooth ride and impeccable body control, even when navigating undulating freeway on-ramps. Although the Active Ride suspension from the German test was not present, the standard setup performed admirably, making the ride enjoyable and controlled.
Performance and Speed
The Panamera 4 accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds—a commendable feat for a base model. Compared to the rear-wheel-drive version, it achieves slightly quicker acceleration, likely due to the enhanced grip from its all-wheel-drive system. Despite this, the vehicle never felt slow, maintaining the dynamic driving experience expected from a Porsche.
Thoughts on All-Wheel Drive
While the all-wheel drive offers marginal acceleration benefits, it might not be necessary for all drivers. For those in regions like Southern California, rear-wheel drive could suffice, potentially improving the driving experience by shedding some weight.
Disappointment with PDK
Surprisingly, Porsche’s dual-clutch automated manual transmission (PDK) fell short in this model. Switching to Sport mode helped improve responsiveness, but the transmission was often slower than desired. Without the Sport+ mode, the transmission struggled to keep up on mountain roads, necessitating manual paddle shifts that sometimes failed to hold the desired gear.
Exemplary Steering
The steering in the Panamera 4 is exceptional, providing a deeply connected feel whether maneuvering at low speeds or tackling canyon roads. The steering wheel itself is ergonomically pleasing, enhancing the driving experience with its ideal vertical positioning.
The Quest for Perfect Controls
The revised center console now features drive elements on touch screens rather than tactile buttons. While this modern approach might appeal to some, it complicates simple adjustments such as suspension tuning or exhaust mode changes. A wheel controller similar to Mercedes-AMG’s would vastly improve usability.
Ridiculous Touch Screen Vents
One of the more impractical designs continues with touchscreen-controlled air vents, which remain as frustrating as ever. The cumbersome process of redirecting airflow was met with incredulity, underscoring the need for more intuitive solutions.
Wireless Charging and Console Critiques
While the new wireless charging pad is a welcome addition, the flimsy bin cover detracts from the overall quality. Similarly, the abundant use of piano black trim in the center console appears cheap and reflects sunlight, causing unnecessary glare.
Luxurious Barrique Red Club Leather
In stark contrast, the Barrique Red Club leather option shines as an attractive feature. The nearly $6,000 option feels worth the price, offering premium comfort, intricate stitching on the dashboard, and extensive leather coverage that exudes luxury.
Supreme Rear Seat Comfort
Despite not offering the most spacious backseat, the Individual Comfort power rear seats may be among the most comfortable, offering adjustability to accommodate various body types perfectly. These back seats make the Panamera ideal for long-distance journeys, providing comfort that rivals its front seats.
Conclusion: A Unique Luxury Experience
Overall, the 2024 Porsche Panamera delivers a distinctive, luxury-driving experience, standing out in Porsche’s lineup and among luxury sedans. With its strengths in driving dynamics and comfort, coupled with some unique but flawed design choices, it provides a varied experience for discerning drivers.
