2024 Range Rover Velar: A Stylish and Capable Mid-Range Marvel
Impressive Styling Enhancements
The Range Rover Velar, a mid-size luxury SUV, has always been rooted in style and design. The 2024 update brings subtle but effective changes. A new grille, enhanced LED lights, and a larger touchscreen are the highlights. The Velar manages to captivate with its "simplified design," featuring a high beltline, pronounced side panels, and a sleek low greenhouse. Imagine a Cold War submarine—streamlined yet commanding. These design choices culminate in a rear that tapers like a ship’s stern. The vehicle’s aesthetics balance sophistication and ruggedness, offering understated British flair in its grille and headlights.
A Designer’s Dream in Dynamic SE
I had the pleasure of test driving the Dynamic SE model in a deep Valesin Blue. This model boasts optional 21-inch gray wheels that seem to shimmer bronze depending on the light. The SUV is adorned with a contrasting black roof and black accents on the grille, fender vents, and badges, adding a touch of sophistication. While I am enamored with the Velar, it’s essential to note that it doesn’t significantly outshine competitors like the Ford Explorer in every way. From certain angles, it exudes a modest elegance that sets it apart.
Cocoon-Like Interior Comfort
Step inside, and the Velar’s interior aims to cocoon its occupants with a sense of security. The high side sills let you sit lower, which contributes to a more athletic feel despite being a mid-size SUV. The design here manages to combine form and function, although this setup means your elbows rest a bit high while cruising, and the mirrors can create blind spots. Still, with seating adjustments, you can find a comfortable position. The cargo space is generous, easily accommodating gear, and the rubber mats in the back are perfect for messy adventures, making it practical as well as stylish.
The Infotainment Experience: Pivi Pro 7
The newest Pivi Pro 7 infotainment system sports an 11.4-inch curved touchscreen. It’s a colorful, sleek interface but not the most intuitive one on the market. Range Rover asserts that 80% of tasks can be completed with just two taps. In practice, some functions—particularly climate control—require frustratingly firm presses, and taps don’t always register. However, it does allow you to manage driving modes, navigation, and other essential functions effectively. It’s a significant improvement over previous systems but still falls short of becoming a class leader.
Performance That Impresses
The Ingenium 3.0-liter mild-hybrid turbo inline-six engine is nothing short of spectacular. It offers a substantial upgrade from the four-cylinder engine, with the added benefit justifying the price. This engine provides a responsive throttle, producing a pleasant and unobtrusive sound while delivering impressive acceleration. The eight-speed automatic transmission complements the engine with smooth shifts. Despite some turbo hybrids being jerky, the Velar demonstrates seamless acceleration. The SUV launches swiftly from a standstill, achieving 0-60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. It’s a balanced powertrain that rivals the offerings from Mercedes, BMW, and Genesis.
The Velar’s Distinct Charm
What truly sets the Velar apart is its charisma. It carries forward Land Rover’s traditional British charm but adds a modern twist. This SUV exudes sportiness mixed with a hint of off-road ruggedness. Its design and performance combined make it a compelling alternative to larger models like the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The Velar stands confidently within the Range Rover lineup, distinguishing itself from the compact Evoque, which often feels like a lesser Range Rover model.
Ultimately, the 2024 Range Rover Velar continues to impress with its refined design, enhanced features, and robust performance. It balances style with practicality, making it a standout choice in the luxury SUV market.
