FYI: The BMW i4 eDrive35 delivers an impressive blend of performance, aesthetics, and practicality, making it a compelling choice for EV enthusiasts seeking a balance between power and efficiency.

—

“Pleasantly normal, shockingly fast,” was how Road Test Editor Zach Palmer described the BMW i4 EV three years ago. At the time, he reviewed the 335-hp i4 eDrive40 and the monstrous 536-hp M50, which earned accolades for its high performance. But for everyday use, does one really need such high power? Enter the BMW i4 eDrive35, a milder single-motor, rear-wheel-drive variant with 282 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

### Adequate Power and Intelligent Design

The power figures might suggest less excitement, but the eDrive35 is no slouch. It clocks in at 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds—quick for a luxury sedan. Interestingly, the car’s drive feels even faster than its numbers might suggest, a testament to BMW’s knack for engineering. The lighter 68.7 kWh battery pack drops nearly 400 pounds compared to its 84.3 kWh counterparts, making it nimble yet stable at approximately 4,680 pounds.

### Subtle Yet Classy Aesthetics

One standout feature of the i4 is its appearance. Designed to blend seamlessly with the rest of BMW’s 4 and 3 Series lineup, it manages an understated elegance. The review model sported a Dravit Gray Metallic finish with a Tacora Red SensaTec leather-alternative interior, a stunning combination that adds a touch of luxury.

### Enhanced Lighting and Safety Features

The i4 comes with interior LED pipes that glow blue by default. However, they change red when a door is opened, a safety feature intended to alert other drivers. Additionally, the car was equipped with an optional M Sport Package Pro, which includes advanced Icon adaptive LED/Laserlight headlights—highly recommended if nighttime driving is frequent. This package, combined with adaptive M suspension and 19″ aero wheels, pushes the car’s price to almost $65,000 but enhances driving comfort and control markedly.

### Adaptive Regenerative Braking

The eDrive35 employs an adaptive regenerative braking system. It adjusts based on traffic conditions ahead, mimicking downshifts in an automatic transmission. This feature, while lacking one-pedal drive, allows for a smooth and intuitive braking experience. Drivers can switch between D and B modes for varying levels of regen, although finding the right control might take a moment.

### Superior Comfort and Options

The car featured a host of comfort options, such as thigh extenders on the seats and an $875 Harman Kardon stereo system, both adding significant value. The practical 4 Series liftback design also proved handy in sweltering weather, offering quick ventilation by opening the liftback instead of rolling down windows—a lifesaver during 90-degree heat waves.

### Advanced Infotainment Interaction

BMW’s infotainment, while complex, benefits from a responsive voice assistant. It was accurate in delivering data like miles per kWh and even offered driving tips to improve efficiency. However, the heads-up display (HUD) was somewhat cryptic with its symbols and might need custom settings to be more intuitive.

### Space Constraints and Charging Convenience

Back seat space remains a compromise, particularly troubling for adults with limited legroom under the front seats. On the charging front, the i4 supports fast-charging up to 195kW, offering a swift 10% to 80% charge in about 30 minutes. A Level 2 home charger fully charges the battery in under 12 hours, ideal for daily commuters. In practical terms, users may only rarely need to fully deplete the car’s 276-mile range.

### Final Thoughts

In summary, the BMW i4 eDrive35 offers an excellent balance of style, practicality, and moderate performance. Its thoughtful design and numerous options provide an engaging and comfortable driving experience, backed by BMW’s engineering prowess. At a starting price of $53,195, it’s a compelling entry point into the luxury EV market.
