Toyota Tackles Engine Failures: Over 100,000 Tundra and Lexus LX 600 Engines to Be Replaced
By Donald Smith, Editor of Automotive.fyi
In a significant move to uphold their reputation for reliability, Toyota has announced a massive recall affecting 102,092 vehicles due to continuous failures of the twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6 engine. This recall impacts 98,568 Tundra pickups and 3,524 Lexus LX 600 SUVs. The Japanese automaker is responding to the severe issue by opting to replace the entire engine in the affected vehicles, free of charge.
The Core Issue
Toyota pinpointed the root cause of these engine failures to metal shavings contaminating the lubrication system, stemming from inadequately cleaned oil passages during manufacturing. This contamination process results in clogs in critical areas such as the oil pickup tube and main bearings, inevitably leading to engine blowouts. The engines in question are present in Tundras made between November 2, 2021, and February 13, 2023, and Lexus LX 600s manufactured from July 30, 2021, to November 25, 2022.
Although Toyota reports no injuries linked to these defects, the company has already dealt with a substantial number of warranty claims—824 to be precise.
Investigation and Response
Toyota’s first indication of this pervasive issue surfaced in March 2022, when several V35A engine-equipped vehicles experienced stalling. Subsequent investigations revealed that the crankshaft main bearing seizure was the primary culprit. By July of the same year, Toyota identified bearing damage in additional engines, prompting further inspections and an update to the engine cleaning procedures.
Despite these proactive steps, Toyota wisely decided on a comprehensive engine replacement strategy, even for engines manufactured post-process update, reflecting their commitment to customer safety and satisfaction.
What Owners Need to Know
For affected vehicle owners, this extensive recall means that Toyota will replace their engines at no personal expense. This move is a testament to Toyota’s dedication to preserving its legacy of durable and reliable vehicles.
