FYI: Mercedes-Benz to deliver gas and electric options for their next S-Class by the end of the decade.
Mercedes-Benz to Launch Eighth-Generation S-Class with Dual Powertrain Options
Mercedes-Benz is set to redefine luxury with the arrival of its eighth-generation S-Class towards the end of the decade. The upcoming flagship sedan will provide buyers with the choice between traditional gasoline-powered engines and state-of-the-art electric powertrains. Marking a significant milestone in automotive innovation, this development was confirmed by Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius in an interview with Autocar.
Two Powertrains, One Iconic Design
"There will be two S-Classes in the future—ICE and electric," Källenius asserted, aligning with Mercedes’ refreshed strategy to continue selling internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles alongside electric vehicles (EV) into the next decade. This marks a shift from their earlier plan, which aimed to transition entirely to electric vehicles by 2030.
Distinct Platforms for Gas and Electric Variants
Both the gas and electric versions of the upcoming S-Class will share the same exquisite design, inside and out, but will be built on different platforms. The gas-powered S-Class will utilize an updated version of the current platform, while the electric S-Class will be built on the new MB.EA Large platform, developed specifically for midsize and full-size EVs. This approach diverges from Mercedes’ strategy for the G-Class, which sees both gas and electric versions sharing a single platform.
EQS to be Phased Out
With the next-generation S-Class embracing electric propulsion, the EQS, Mercedes’ current full-size EV, is likely to be phased out following its current production cycle. This transition is influenced by declining sales, with the EQS witnessing a 52% drop in the first half of 2024 to just 5,108 units in the U.S. Similarly, the S-Class saw a 33% decrease in the same period, with sales dropping to 4,785 units, prompting Mercedes to reduce production from two shifts to one.
Facelifts Before the Big Launch
Before unveiling the new S-Class, Mercedes plans significant facelifts for both the current S-Class and the EQS. These updates are expected to hit the U.S. market for the 2026 model year, keeping the models fresh until the new generation takes over.
Conclusion
Mercedes-Benz is charting a dual-path strategy for its iconic S-Class, catering to both traditional and progressive luxury car buyers. The introduction of gas and electric powertrains within the same model line showcases the brand’s commitment to versatility and innovation. As we approach the end of the decade, the automotive world watches with keen interest as Mercedes merges elegance with cutting-edge technology.
