FYI: Mercedes is planning to scrap its EQS model in favor of a more conventional electric S-Class due to underwhelming sales and consumer feedback.
Mercedes to Replace EQS with More Traditional Electric S-Class
Mercedes-Benz is set to overhaul its electric vehicle strategy by phasing out the unconventional EQS model in favor of a more traditional electric version of its flagship S-Class sedan. This move comes amidst changing market dynamics and feedback from prospective buyers.
Rethinking Electric Strategy
Initially, Mercedes aimed to maintain separate lineups for electric and combustion vehicles. However, the underperformance of the EQS has led to a strategic pivot. The EQS, marketed as the electric equivalent of the prestigious S-Class, has not resonated well with customers, prompting Mercedes to rethink its approach.
Sales Figures Tell the Story
Mercedes’ Q2 2024 U.S. sales report reveals a significant 52% drop in combined sales of the EQS sedan and EQS SUV for the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2023. In contrast, the smaller EQE sedan and SUV experienced a more modest 4% decline. This data underscores the challenges Mercedes faces with its current EV lineup.
Future EV Plans
Mercedes plans to phase out the EQS nameplate after the current model cycle ends. The replacement will be an electric version of the next-gen S-Class, expected around the decade’s end. Despite sharing similar interior and exterior designs with their combustion counterparts, the electric and ICE versions will be built on different platforms.
The upcoming electric S-Class will utilize the MB.EA platform, a departure from the current EVA platform used in the EQS and EQE models. This strategic decision aligns with Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius’ denial of halting development on the MB.EA platform, reaffirming the company’s commitment to future EV innovations.
Technical Enhancements
To make the EQS more appealing, Mercedes plans a substantial technical update mid-next year. The transition from a 400-volt to an 800-volt architecture, inspired by the upcoming electric CLA, will reduce the 10-80% charging time by 10 minutes. Additionally, advancements in battery chemistry are set to extend the range by 37 miles, achieving 535 miles WLTP in the longest-range model.
The updated EQS will also feature a two-speed gearbox, akin to the Porsche Taycan, enhancing both acceleration and high-speed efficiency. This model will boast a higher top speed than the current EQ S580, which maxes out at 130 mph.
Combustion and Hybrid Models Also Struggle
Even the combustion-powered S-Class, including the S580e plug-in hybrid with an EPA electric range of 46 miles, hasn’t escaped the downturn. Sales of this flagship sedan declined by 33% in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year, reflecting a broader industry shift from sedans to SUVs. Conversely, the GLS SUV saw a 22% sales increase, highlighting the changing consumer preferences.
Upcoming Overhaul for S-Class
Mercedes has ambitious plans to refresh its S-Class lineup next year. This major overhaul will introduce more power and extended electric range in the plug-in hybrid models. Expect a bold exterior redesign featuring a striking grille, and an upgraded interior boasting a 56-inch Hyperscreen that incorporates three displays under one expansive pane of glass.
