FYI: The highly anticipated VinFast VF9 makes its U.S. debut with a lower price tag and impressive specs.
Unveiled at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show, the VinFast VF9 was initially set to hit U.S. dealerships late last year. However, its arrival was delayed and is now expected next month, bringing with it a reduced price tag that is sure to entice potential buyers. Just a year ago, the three-row electric SUV was priced at $83,000. Car and Driver, along with the VinFast site, now confirm that the entry-level VF9 Eco will start at approximately $71,000, including shipping—a substantial $12,000 reduction. The VF9 Plus variant will be available for $75,000, down $16,000 from its previously announced price of $91,000.
Federal Tax Credits Uncertain
VinFast’s stance on federal tax credits remains unclear. The company had previously promised to cover the full $7,500 tax credit until it could establish a new facility and streamline battery sourcing in North Carolina to comply with federal guidelines. Yet, any mention of this commitment is notably absent on their retail site, leaving buyers in uncertainty.
Uncertainty on Dealership Specifications
At this point, it’s hard to determine which VF9s will be available at dealerships. The model configurator on VinFast’s site states "pending confirmation" for the Eco variant, which could be a site issue. It’s also worth noting that the price may vary based on chosen color. Apart from Jet Black, other colors like Crimson Red, Deep Ocean, Neptune Gray, and Vinfast Blue come with additional costs of $1,200 or $1,500. Another caveat on VinFast’s site mentions, "Certain Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) technology features may be delivered with a delay, may be offered as part of a future software update for the vehicle, or may be subject to a subscription."
Impressive Specifications and Features
The VF9 Eco boasts an EPA-rated driving range of 330 miles on a single charge, while the VF9 Plus offers a 291-mile range. Both models are equipped with a 123-kWh battery pack and dual motors, providing 402 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque, coupled with all-wheel drive. Standard features include a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a head-up display, 13-speaker audio system with subwoofer, ambient lighting, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, surround-view camera, front and rear park assist systems, auto high beams, and three systems assisting with lane-keeping.
The VF9 justifies its premium price with luxurious add-ons like a panoramic glass roof, enhanced front and second-row seating, an 8-inch display screen in the rear console, and 21-inch wheels.
Market Position and Sales
VinFast has yet to disclose its U.S. sales figures, making it difficult to gauge the reception of its 12,058 deliveries in the second quarter of this year. Positioned between the top-tier Kia EV9 and the entry-level Rivian R1S, the VF9 aims to carve out a unique spot in the electric SUV market.
Conclusion
VinFast is poised to make a splash in the U.S. market with the VF9. Offering competitive pricing and a suite of advanced features, the VF9 could indeed become a popular pick among electric SUV enthusiasts.
