FYI: Volvo elevates its EV lineup in the U.S. with new names and enhanced battery capabilities.
Volvo Electrifies U.S. Market with EX40 and EC40 Name Changes
The automotive landscape is evolving, and Volvo is not lagging behind. The Swedish automaker is making waves in the United States with its newly rechristened Volvo EX40, previously known as the XC40 Recharge. This name change is part of a broader strategic realignment of Volvo’s electric vehicle (EV) lineup, aligning with models like the EX30 and EX90. The transformation doesn’t stop at rebranding; the 2025 EX40 boasts a beefier battery and expanded range, promising more efficiency than ever before.
New Identity, Enhanced Performance
- Expanded Battery Capacity: The EX40 comes equipped with an 82-kilowatt-hour battery pack in its Twin Motor variants, a step up from the former 78 kWh pack. This enhancement is key for those seeking robustness in their eco-friendly journeys.
- Range Boost: According to EPA evaluations, the single-motor variant now offers a range of 296 miles per charge, slightly up from its predecessor’s 293 miles. Not to be overshadowed, the dual-motor variant achieves a commendable 260-mile range.
- Charging Speedup: Charging capabilities also see improvement, with peak DC fast charging speeds nudging up from 200 kW to 205 kW for a faster top-up.
EC40 and the Road Ahead
Volvo’s coupe-inspired C40 Recharge will now be recognized as the EC40, reinforcing the electric-centric nomenclature approach. While temporarily taking a hiatus, the EC40 is set to return as a 2026 model. Interestingly, despite its break, the EPA lists two versions for 2025 with an impressive single-motor range of 298 miles and a dual-motor range of 268 miles, illustrating Volvo’s relentless pursuit of efficiency and innovation.
Price Adjustments: A Pleasant Surprise
Pricing remains a sweet spot for the new EX40, starting at $52,500. Buyers eyeing the more advanced dual-motor configuration can expect a price tag of $60,750. These figures reflect a modest price cut of $1,245 for entry-level and $1,095 for premium models compared to previous offerings. It’s a strategic move by Volvo to offer more for less, appealing to a market seeking value without compromising quality.
Diverse Offerings Spurring Growth
Volvo’s U.S. portfolio expansion doesn’t stop with the newly named models. The introduction of the compact and affordable EX30 alongside the luxury EX90 fills a crucial gap in Volvo’s lineup, marking the brand’s aggressive push to reclaim ground lost in last year’s dip in EV sales.
Volvo’s comprehensive overhaul is a decisive step to solidify its footprint in the competitive EV market. As the brand moves away from its initial electric ventures, these innovative steps signify Volvo’s commitment to the electric future, driving it forward with a renewed zest for efficiency and customer satisfaction.
