FYI: Rumors are swirling about a potential affordable variant of the Tesla Model Y in China, stirring interest among automotive enthusiasts.
Tesla’s Rumored Model Y “E80”: An Affordable Future?
Recent whispers from Chinese social media and news circles suggest that Tesla China might be working on a new, budget-friendly option, internally dubbed the "E80." This vehicle is rumored to offer a more accessible version of the popular Model Y crossover.
Details from the Rumor Mill
Speculation indicates that the Model Y "E80" will feature a 50-55 kWh battery. A potential release date is linked to how well the latest Model Y performs in the market. Some sources claim the E80 could hit the market as early as late 2025 or perhaps 2026.
Pricing chatter is varied, with a range from 150,000-170,000 yuan ($20,500-$23,300) to 190,000-210,000 yuan ($26,000-$28,800) being discussed. For context, the current Model Y in China ranges from 263,500 yuan ($36,160) to 313,500 yuan ($43,000).
This cost-effective variant might lack some of the premium features seen in other models. Predicted specifications include smaller wheels, single-layer side windows, fabric seats without heating or ventilation, manual trunk, and a metal roof. Additionally, the E80 is expected to have fewer speakers, single-color interior lighting, and no rear display.
A Proven Strategy?
While officially unconfirmed, the idea aligns with Tesla’s strategy of offering simplified versions of its models. Recently, the company introduced a similarly pared-down version of the Cybertruck, priced significantly lower without compromising essential performance.
Tesla’s VP of Engineering, Lars Moravy, hinted at upcoming affordable models during the Q1 2025 earnings call, promising they will be familiar in form and significantly more economical.
Wrap-Up
As these rumors develop, the potential introduction of the Model Y "E80" could redefine the landscape for electric vehicles by making them more accessible to a broader audience. Stay tuned for more updates from the evolving world of Tesla and beyond.
